Jamie Oliver & Harvard University School of Public Health

I was lucky to be able to attend the awards ceremony Tuesday evening, May 22 to witness Jamie Oliver accept the Healthy Cup Award from the Harvard School of Public Health. This award is given by The Nutrition Round Table for someone who has made a contribution to the field of nutrition.    He was so excited to receive the award and said" I feel blessed, honored for this.  If you knew my history in schools, this is a big deal.  I came out of nothing.  And to be at Harvard...I'd like to milk it."*  Dr. Walter Willett, chair of the nutrition Department presented the award saying that Oliver has made a dramatic contribution to public health.  He has changed the ways millions of people think about healthy eating."*

Whole Grains Tasting Day

We missed you on Thursday April 5, for Whole Grains Tasting Day. Seventeen of us gathered in Cambridge to enjoy a menu of whole grains and to hear Dr. Walter Willett speak about Whole Grains and Health. The feedback was very positive so we'll be sponsoring other food evening in the future.

I started cooking on Wednesday and continued on Thursday with the help of Jonathan Burgess. Jonathan and I met in Napa in March at the Culinary institute of America(CIA) Conference. When he heard that I was offering this class he asked to be my sous chef. I'm so glad I had his help.

I choose a menu that would be a joy to eat and to introduce some new foods.

So, this is what I decided to cook for breakfast: Kashi Pilaf served with nuts and dried fruits.
Lunch/dinner foods: Farro Mushroom Peanut Burgers; Roasted Butternut Squash with Farro and Goat Cheese, and Fennel Fish Soup with Whole Wheat Couscous. And desserts: Chocolate Chip Cookies made with Whole Wheat Flour and Rosemary Chocolate Cake made with Splet flour.

The feedback was terrific. The food was good, but attendees were happy to hear Dr. Willett talk about health and whole grains.

Hope you will join us for our next event.
